While Sparks may be located close to Reno, this suburb is able to stand on its own to entertain visitors. Since the 1950s, Sparks has been steadily growing and today boasts its own skyscraper-casino, John Ascuaga's Nugget. Casinos are a popular pastime in Sparks, many which are found in Victorian Square, a pedestrian area made up of entertainment venues, casinos, restaurant and shops. For families, Sparks features Marina Park, a swimming and fishing lake, and Wild Island an all-in-one mini-golf course, water park, games area and bowling alley. Golfers in Sparks can hit the greens on the city's numerous courses or visit the nearby courses in Reno . Nature lovers can visit the nearby Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, which offers many recreational activities. Sparks' central location in the Reno and Lake Tahoe region lends it to be a gateway to California, Lake Tahoe, area ski hills and many other destinations.
